What is Pilates?

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s, it is an exercise programme based on abdominal strength. Initially it was developed for rehabilitation of war injuries, and then modified for ballet dancers. Today this system has been adapted to optimize your natural body stabilisers so you become more efficient and increasingly toned while enhancing your sporting function and preventing any injuries, aches and strains.

Who is Pilates for?

Anyone and everyone – our Pilates programmes are specifically designed for 'you' by our qualified physiotherapists. You and your therapist work together to target personal goals.

What is involved in setting up a Pilates programme?

It may take 3 to 5 one-on-one half-hour sessions to set up your programme. Instruction will be given about the principles of Pilates, the equipment, and your exercise regime. The first visit will be used to discuss any relevant medical problems, functional requirements and personal goals. The remaining sessions will review your response to the activities and check that the programme is targeting your goals. You can then confidently proceed self-directed if you wish.

Specific fitness training

A programme can be designed specifically for you or for a small group of up to four. Half-hour sessions are available for 1-2 persons, and one hour sessions for groups of up to four. Clients can decide on their frequency of sessions and the physiotherapist can also develop a home programme for the client if required.

Remember – you don’t have to do this alone. One-on-one sessions with your qualified physiotherapist are available or you can come in with up to three friends – split the cost and exercise together.
